Stolen laptops continue to pose a security threat with data on them being stored unencrypted in spite of a directive that mandates the removal or encryption of sensitive data on notebook computers. Boeing has now had two laptops with the names, Social Security numbers, and in a few cases, banking information, of nearly 165,000 employees stolen from the hands of its human resources personnel. The company is taking various steps to address the problem, including informing those who may be at risk of having their identities stolen and providing them with free credit-monitoring services. All laptops are being audited and any sensitive information is being erased. The company has also made it compulsory for employees handling sensitive training to undergo training, besides prohibiting such information from being stored on laptops and mandating the use of encryption software on all laptops.
